Turneffe Island Lodge
Caye Bokel, Belize  •  Central America

T h e   o f f - s h o r e ,   w e s t e r n   C a r i b b e a n  resort, Turneffe Island Lodge, has a well deserved reputation as one of the best angling spots in Central America, and, for the multi-faceted outdoorsman, it offers the promise of superb bonefishing, permit, and tarpon, as well as some of the finest snorkeling and skin diving in the world.

Its location on Cay Bokel, a dogleg shaped island off the coast of Belize (formerly British Honduras) has been a Mecca for serious flats fishermen from all over the world since 1959. It has been written about, promoted, and highly touted by Joe Brooks and Lefty Kreh, among others, for more than thirty years and is one of the most famous saltwater destinations on the planet.

Turneffe Island Lodge limits the number of fisherman each week to eight, and uses four brand new, swift, Dolphin Super-Skiffs for transportation to expansive, shallow fishing grounds that begin a stone's throw away from the lodge. The flats are hard-bottomed and gin-clear, protected on the windward side by the second largest barrier reef in the world, surrounded by mangrove-covered cays, and often stretching for as far as the eye can see. With the help of one of Turneffe's talented, English-speaking guides, it's not unusual to spot hundreds of fish while wading the ankle to knee deep water.

There have been some relatively recent changes that made this great destination even better! The government of Belize for the last five seasons has aggressively enforced strict catch-and-release regulations and a ban on native netting of bonefish and the results are staggering! The easily waded flats in the southern portion of the Turneffe archipelago (where fishing pressure and conservation measures are also monitored and controlled by Turneffe Island Lodge) are now teeming with large bonefish. The average size has nearly doubled over those caught a decade ago.

Non-fishing guests can simply enjoy the relaxing island atmosphere, optional snorkeling, or world-famous SCUBA diving.

Species of Fish:  Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon, Snook, Jack Crevalle, and Barracuda.

Lodging:  Turneffe Island Lodge has a proud history of satisfying anglers that has been amplified by a recent change in ownership and a complete remodel of the facility. This remote and beautiful setting now offers deluxe accommodations and equipment that set a new standard for the rest of the industry. The food is good, and the friendly, native, English-speaking staff make the stay at Turneffe more than just another trip. It is a cultural experience, as well.
