Tiamo Lodge: Fishing Day

Guides
Our dedicated and professional fishing team boasts over 100 years of bone-fishing between them. They know these waters intimately and their passion, their knowledge and their easy-going nature make them your perfect companions for a day out on the water.

We have a team of five guides at Tiamo – here is a brief history of just two of them.

Rise and "Shine"
Ornald "Shine" Greene of Mangrove Cay, Andros, has been a professional guide for many years. His eyes are his greatest asset. He takes great pride in spotting the biggest “bones” and putting his clients onto them by skilful boat handling and a deep understanding of bonefish behavior. His most memorable day in his 16ft flats boat with its 90hp engine was on Andros Island’s legendary West Side, where he and his client landed an amazing 25 fish in the 6 to 10 pound class.

Morning Marvin
Marvin Miller also of Mangrove Cay, Andros, is another veteran of the bonefish guiding business. He is the morning man - his favorite time to fish is in the flat light of early morning, just as the sun clears the horizon and the bones tail in huge numbers on the flat water of the rising tide. A strong boat-handler, Marvin is known for his quick thinking and ace presentation. His best day in recent memory was also on the West Side, where he guided a client to the catch of a lifetime - an extraordinary 37 fish landed in just over eight hours.

Bone Fishing
The Bahamas are renowned the world over for bone-fishing and South Andros in particular offers you, our visiting angler, a truly unique experience of exciting and challenging fishing. An almost endless variety of shallow, hard sand-flats, tidal creeks, mangrove-covered shorelines, tiny islets and sand spits run all the way to the fabled "West side".

Set on the South Bight, Tiamo enjoys direct access to these remote fishing areas, many of them wadable hard white sand. Guests regularly catch trophy-sized bonefish in the azure waters right in front of The Great Room. For some of the most prolific bone-fishing action anywhere in the Bahamas, it is hard to beat Tiamo. Andros is not known as the bone fishing capital of the world for nothing!

Self guided fishing is just a few steps away for those who might want a few hours of fishing instead of a full or half day of guided fishing. The waters right in front of the resort are home to some monster bones (but they are super smart, of course). Blue Water Fishing

Just a short distance from the dock at Tiamo you will find some of the finest virgin Blue Water and reef fishing on the planet. Highlight catches of the season include Sailfish, Wahoo, Kingfish, Dorado and two species of Tuna - Yellow fin and Black fin, while closer to the reef you’ll see abundant Snapper, Grouper and Barracuda.

Tiamo has its own boat, fully-equipped for blue water fishing, which (weather permitting) will take bone fishermen, their partners and guests on exploratory trips to catch their supper! Longer day trips out on the water can also be arranged.

Other Species.
Tiamo is almost unique in being able to find you fishing flats protected from the wind whichever way it’s blowing. Feel like a change? You can cast a fly or a lure to a barracuda as light spinning rods are carried in every boat. Permit are seen occasionally but even more rarely caught! Tarpon can be targeted in the creeks on the west side and at certain times of year can be ambushed while migrating on the flats. Various species of snapper and jacks can be caught on the fly and you’ll find plentiful grouper and tuna in and around the nearby reef.

Whether you are a novice or a seasoned angler, Tiamo offers some of the most extraordinarily prolific salt-water fishing to be found anywhere in the world.
