Fishing Day
The Bahamas are known for some of
the best fishing in the world, and the island of Grand Bahama is
no exception.
North Riding Point Club has
access to the best bonefishing flats on both the north and south
shores of Grand Bahama. The north shore of Grand Bahama has
the largest bonefish habitat, comprising several hundred square
miles of flats, inlets, and mangrove-covered cays literally teeming
with large, wild bonefish. It is not uncommon to see dozens, if
not hundreds, of fish in a single day.
Grand Bahama is also the place
to catch large bonefish - those trophy fish we all dream about -
in excess of 10 pounds. Fish in the 10 - 12 pound range are
fairly common. In March 2007 a record bonefish of 16 lbs was caught,
one of our guests teetered on the brink of a new world record by
landing a 15+ pound bonefish! The lodge estimates the average size
of landed bonefish to be around 4 - 6 pounds - somewhat larger than
the average you will find on most other bonefish flats around the
world.
Each day you'll drive to one
of several launch sites located less than 20 minutes away and spend
the day on flats that seldom see anglers. Your lunches will
be prepared according to your instructions from the lunch menu,
left with the kitchen the previous night and the ice chest will
be packed with your favorite refreshments.

The bonefish of this portion
of Grand Bahama Island are large, and shots at trophy fish are common.
The guides are excellent seasoned professionals, and are rated among
the best in the Bahamas. There is some wading, though most of the
flats that harbor large bonefish are better suited to poling.
The Club recommends flyfishing,
although some of our guests choose spin fishing gear to pursue bonefish
and other species. Most fishing is done from a poled 16'
Dolphin boat with 85 hp Yamaha, although in several areas the wading
is first-rate. The flats vary in nature; many exhibit a soft marl
or mud bottom, while others support turtle grass, and still others
consist of firm, white sand. In all, multiple species of shrimp,
crabs, and other bonefish prey are plentiful.
Anglers wanting to take a break
from bonefishing to pursue other species of fish on either fly or
spin rod will find many choices. Permit are quite frequently
encountered at various times of the year and tarpon are occasionally
sighted. Multiple species, such as barracuda, several species of
jack, small lemon and blacktip sharks, and snappers can be found
in and around the flats that hold bonefish. For a different experience,
nearby offshore reefs provide great action - a short boat ride from
the Club will bring you there. The reefs around Grand Bahama hold
dozens of species, among them the prized grouper, as well as jacks,
snapper, sharks, mackerel, and amberjack.
