ISLA HOLBOX
AN ISLAND SURROUNDED BY TARPON

fishing day

Each fishing day will start with a gentle espresso/coffee wake-up around 5:30 AM, followed by a continental breakfast.

The guide will arrive around 6:30 AM to begin your day of fishing. Depending upon where and how you want to fish, you could be looking for fish in 10 – 15 minutes or if you decide to venture out to the lighthouse, you will be looking at a ride of about an hour. Lunches are taken on the boat so as not to waste fishing time riding back and forth to the lodge. You will be back at the lodge between 2:30 and 3:00 PM.

This gives you time to repair and/or clean equipment, get it ready for the next day’s fishing, have a swim, shower and siesta and be ready and rested for happy hour and dinner later on after sundown when it cools off. The restaurants are located an easy walk from the lodge or you can use the golf cart taxi to get around. Sitting at one of the eateries around the town plaza retelling fish stories and people watching makes for a fun, interesting evening.

When fishing from the boat, anglers will take turns (or “ups”). Usually, they are 20 – 30 minutes in duration or until a fish is hooked or caught whichever is shorter. This gives both anglers ample time on deck ready to cast. If both casters know each other well and are good casters there are ways for both to get off shots at schools of big tarpon, doubling chances of a hook-up. Whatever method is used to determine who is up, make sure it is set up in such a way that one person doesn’t monopolize the casting platform and both anglers are happy with it.
