| GRAND SLAM FLY FISHING LODGE
PUNTA ALLEN, MEXICAN YUCATAN
In the Mexican Yucatan, near the small village of Punta Allen, you can find the first of its kind fishing lodge in Mexico and maybe all of Central America.
Grand Slam Fly Fishing Lodge was built to luxury specifications throughout, but with the goal of offering the best in lodging for anglers fishing the flats of Ascension Bay and their non-angling spouses, friends and families.
On Google Earth, locate: 19.47N and 87.26W. This will put you in Punta Allen. Just on the jungle/beach border of this small fishing village, the lodge sits on a beautiful beach that offers views of the Caribbean from all of the cabanas. From the lodging, you can take a few short paces to snorkel the waters just off of the beach, grab a kayak for some paddling in the sea or walk a few more steps inland to take a dip in their fresh water pool.
The drive there from the Cancun area is about 3 hours south. You will travel Hwy 307 past some of the biggest and most luxurious resorts of the Mayan Riviera. The famous Tulum ruin is just a short hop off of the hwy where you will turn onto the primitive road along the coast. This road is now much improved over the same road ten or more years ago. It was a real adventure, then, taking 3 or more hours to travel the 30 miles from Tulum to Punta Allen. Some of the potholes formed after heavy rains had to be waded first to make sure they weren’t too deep for your vehicle. Some car rental agencies even had amendments to their contracts stating that this road was not to be driven in their vehicles. And anyone venturing down that road, in the 90’s or earlier, will remember the old wooden bridge at Boca Paila. In its latter years, I know people who would not cross it in a vehicle, but would get out of the car and walk across the bridge looking into the water through gaping holes in it, hoping the old timbers would hold the car and driver following them. Now, that old bridge has been replaced and the road is graded now and then so that it is only about an hour to make the trip. Most of it is in the Sian Ka’an preserve and is a very interesting drive.
As nice and even luxurious as the Grand Slam Fly Fishing Lodge is, it is first and foremost a fishing lodge. It gives anglers one of the best flats fisheries in the Yucatan and their non-angling guests a vacation worth writing home about and looking forward to a return stay. |
