Seasons
I don’t know if there is a
“bad” season at Blue Horizon Lodge.
When one tries to pin down
a specific time with Lincoln Westby to fish there, he will tell
you that their guides can find permit during each month of the year.
The weather at the time you are there will make more difference
than any other component of fishing conditions. The winds, for instance,
can negate a low or high tide. A strong off-shore (west) wind can
turn a high tide into a low tide and a low tide into a minus tide.
There are those who like the days right after a full moon, those
who like the new moon and those who prefer the more even tides the
times between full and new moons bring. Just get there and have
your casting arm in shape and your double haul practiced for casting
into a head or cross wind.
Take a look at historical weather
cycles and seasons. The weather may be more volatile during
the winter months with cold fronts making their way south from the
US, but there are more good fishing days than difficult days during
this time so it makes sense to escape the winter doldrums and head
south for some fishing. The spring usually brings warmer weather
and clearer skies, but the winds can pick up and cause some anglers
some real casting challenges. The summer can bring normal trade
winds from the southeast or calm days to the flats of Belize, but
it is hurricane season and the remote possibility of one brewing
up can happen. A lot of fishers prefer this season because of the
lack of people, the usual, more predictable weather and the big
numbers of fish. Those of us in The Fly Shop Travel Department prefer
this season to fish just about anywhere bonefish swim, especially
in that band of saltwater lying roughly 20 degrees north and south
of the equator.
