Raul San Martins Ghia de Pescas
Chubut Province Argentina, Patagonia
E s q u e l , A r g e n t i n a -- Raul San Martin and his guide operation in the Esquel region of Argentina have no
brochure, no video, and no jazzy promotional piece. What he has is a reputation among the world's finest fishermen as the best! Raul's
experience stems from nearly forty years of flyfishing and guiding near his home. Famed angler, Mel Krieger considers Raul himself, to
be "the finest guide in the world!" Anyone that has ever fished with Raul would not argue.
The setting for the fishing in the Esquel region of Argentina is superb. There is a tremendous
amount of diversity and it can be called the West Yellowstone of its country. This is South American flyfishing for the serious flyfisher
in search of world-class trout fishing, with less interest in luxury accommodations.
Raul and his seasoned guides specialize in the seldom-fished rivers of Los Alerces National Park, remote desert spring creeks near Esquel
and frontier camps in the Patagonia wilderness.
Los Alerces National Park:
This National Park is a spectacular destination, with 28 fish-infested rivers, streams and spring creeks within an hour of Quime Quepan,
the lodge you'll be calling home for your stay in the Los Alerces National Park. The view at Quime Quepan is spectacular, the service is
excellent, the food is good, and the wine selection, great. The menu of waters in the park includes such rivers as the famed Rio Rivadavia
a ten-kilometer river full of fat, healthy Rainbows and Browns. In January of '94 Jerry Fitzpatrick and Mike Michalak caught and released
nearly thirty 'bows and browns over 4 pounds in a 3 hour afternoon stretch. Other fisheries accessed in Los Alerces include Rio Arrayanes,
Rio Frey, El Canal, the list goes on and on.
Arroyo Pescado
Just outside of Esquel is Arroyo Pescado, the most prolific and magnificent desert spring creek in Argentina. It is here that Butch
Cassidy and the Sundance Kid clubbed an unarmed Welsh settler to death after first setting his home afire. This wide, open spring creek
is less than five feet deep in depth and harbors more respectable (3 - 6 lb.) trout than any other piece of water in South America. The
trout are veracious feeders and rise to any type of dry fly casted, but it's the hopper fishing that really drives them nuts.
Raul San Martin has a very diverse and comprehensive fishing program, combining the best waters of Central Argentina. We know of no
other operator who knows his waters better than Raul. He is a gentleman, and a professional flyfisherman with a lot of heart. His
culinary skills, knowledge of the local flora and fauna, along with an uncanny aptitude at making one feel welcome and warm are simply
amazing. He is the quintessential outdoor host.
