The Estancia Guer Aike and the Rio Gallegos
Guer Aike Farm was originally founded in 1900, by a large English sheep ranching company. Shortly thereafter, the property was purchased by the Jose Menendez family (famous for their enormous holdings in Tierra del Fuego), who operated the ranch up until about 40 years ago, when it was sold to a Mr. Danilo Trutanich. His family continues to run the ranching portion of the estancia to this day. Recently, brothers Alex and Pablo de Tomaso have taken over managing the fishing program at this wonderful lower river property, known as the finest water for sea-bright fish on the Rio Gallegos.
The Wonderful Estancia Guer Aike Lodge:
The lovely lodge is surrounded by poplars and native plants (and a wonderful garden!), and dedicated to fly fishermen. The facility itself was built in England in 1915, and re-fabricated on the estancia, board by board, just after the introduction of Brook and Brown trout at the 52nd southern parallel (nearly as far south as Nome, AK is north). A substantial renovation of the original lodge and outbuildings was completed only this last year. Your hosts, Alejandro and Pablo de Tomaso, have done a wonderful job of creating an authentic Argentine ambiance, while including the creature comforts you'd expect in a world-class fly fishing lodge. The Argentine staff is attentive and friendly, and dedicated to making your stay a wonderful memory. The food is amazing, and evening meals are always accompanied by the finest Argentine wines. Once a week, guests are also treated to a traditional lamb "asado", typically for a midday meal. |
