The Rio Menendez:
The Rio Menendez begins in the highlands and flows, unchallenged by rapids, for nearly 35 kilometers through Estancia Despedida, before entering the Rio Grande less than 15 miles upstream from the sea. A significant percentage of the fish that enter the Rio Grande detour permanently up the Menendez, attracted by consistent water flows and picture-perfect spawning habitat. The Menendez is challenging, requiring more sophisticated and delicate techniques than the Rio Grande.
The River Beats on Estancia Despedida
The entire Estancia Despedida is fishable. From the Boca McLennan to the Boca Menendez, there is one pool after another that is usually full of fish. Each 2 fishermen and their guide rotate through each of the 6 major beats (each consisting of several pools) on the Rio Grande and 4 beats on the Menendez. Each beat has plenty of water, and these are the most productive portions of the river. Anglers will seldom repeat any of the same water during their stay. |
