The Angling Schedule and the Fishing on the Rio Gallegos:
Each two anglers are assigned a guide and a vehicle. The best of the fishing is usually in the morning, late afternoon, and evening until dark. Because the most productive angling often lasts well into the night, particularly during the long days of early season (December-February), most anglers choose to fish several hours each morning, take a long lunch break, then return to the river in the afternoon, well-rested and prepared for the nocturnal battles. Dinner is served at 11:00 pm or later at this time of year, late by American standards.
The Rio Gallegos is a relatively shallow river, and demands basic skills familiar to classic steelhead and salmon anglers. The guides are well trained Argentines, familiar with the intricacies of flyfishing and well-versed in the nuances of every pool and riffle. Though weather patterns effect the fishing, over the past few years fishermen have averaged six to ten hook-ups a day, often a mixture of sea-trout (5-20 pounds) and native browns (1-5 pounds).
The River Beats on Estancia Carlota
The entire Estancia Carlota is fishable, though due to the shallow nature of the river, the beats are purposefully chosen to maximize time spent on the deeper, more productive stretches. Each two anglers and their guide rotate through the seemingly endless water this 50,000-hectare ranch encompasses, fishing different areas each morning and evening, never needing to repeat the same water during their stay. As well, during your stay you'll have the opportunity to experience miles of the Gallegos Chico, a classic, winding private spring creek loaded with colorful native brown trout in the 14"-20" range. |
