The Fishing Program - Estancia Maria Behety

The Angling Schedule and the Fishing on the Rio Grande
Each two anglers are assigned a guide and vehicle. The best of the fishing is usually in the morning, late afternoon, and evening until dark. Because the most productive angling often lasts until nearly midnight during the long days of the early (December-January) season, many serious anglers fish for several hours each morning, then return to the river in the afternoon, well-rested and prepared for the nocturnal battles. Dinner is served at 11:00 p.m. or later at this time of year, late by American standards.

The Rio Grande demands basic skills familiar to classic steelhead and salmon fishing. The guides are all well-trained, bilingual Argentines, familiar with the intricacies of fly fishing and well-versed in the nuances of every pool and riffle. Though weather patterns effect the fishing, over the last five years anglers have averaged close to a dozen hook-ups each day. About half the fish are successfully landed and most are in the four to six kilo range.

The River Beats on Estancia Maria Behety
The entire Estancia Maria Behety is fishable. The wild, sea-run browns hold in very predictable pockets and pools. Each two fishermen and their guide rotate through more than 100 major pools on the Rio Grande. Each of the beats has plenty of water, usually encompassing several large pools (more than enough water for two anglers), and these are the most productive portions of the river. Anglers will fish a different area of the river each morning and evening and never repeat any of the same water during their stay. Angling guests staying at the Maria Behety Lodge have a veritable "pick of the litter" each day, with access to the most productive pools on the ranch.
