| Getting
There
On the day preceding your arrival
into Baranof Lodge, you will need to make arrangements to overnight
in the historically rich town of Sitka, in southeast Alaska.
There are three flights a day
into Sitka from Seattle - any one of them will work, depending on
how much time you wish to spend exploring the town. A remote
burg of 7,000 people, Sitka survives on its tourist industry, as
well as being a commercial fishing village. There is a fascinating
totem pole display, as well as museums, sport stores, local artisan
handiwork for sale and restaurants. Sitka is proud of its fishing
and mining heritage- it's a fun little town to stroll around in.
We recommend you make reservations at one of two hotels; the West
Mark (907) 747-6241, probably the nicest rooms in town, or the Sitka
Hotel (907) 747-3288, a very clean operation with more modest prices.
For an evening meal, try the Channel Club - a superb steak &
seafood eatery!
On the morning of your arrival
to the lodge, your floatplane departs Harris Air in Sitka
at around 8:00 a.m. Harris Air is located next to the Alaska Airlines
terminal. You can use local taxis for transportation to and from
the airport and to your hotel, or call Sitka Tours (907-747-8443)
upon arrival - they provide a shuttle bus ground transportation
service. Please check in with Harris Air (907) 966-3050 upon your
arrival in Sitka - they'll advise you of the exact departure time
the next morning. Keep in mind it will take a couple of flights
to transport everyone from Sitka to the lodge, and occasionally
flights can be slightly weather delayed. Typically, on departure
from the lodge, you'll leave mid-afternoon, overnight once again
in Sitka, and catch a connecting flight back out the next day to
Seattle.
