Alaska West: Equipment and Flies

Wilderness Place Lodge can provide 100% of fishing equipment necessary during your stay. From rods, reels, lines, flies, waders and boots, all equipment is high quality and on-site for your use at no extra charge.

Recommended equipment by species:

King Salmon: 9 foot, 9 or 10 weight fly rods with interchangeable sinking tip system, quality reel with 200 yards of 30# backing, and large flies (2 – 5 inches long) in black, pink, purple and chartreuse. Alternatively, 14 foot, 9 weight rods are ideal.

Silver, Chum and Pink Salmon: 9 foot, 7 or 8 weight fly rods, with interchangeable floating and sinking tip system, 150 yards 20# backing. Surface 'polywog' style flies and sinking rabbit leech style flies, #2.

Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden and Grayling: 9 foot 6 weight fly rods. Floating and light sink tip lines, strike indicators, AA split shot. Glo bug, henille eggs and plastic beads to imitate salmon eggs, as well as flesh, leech and sculpin patterns in tan, black and olive, #4-2.
