| Great Abaco Bonefish Club Abaco Island, Bahamas
F e w C a r i b b e a n b o n e f i s h d e s t i n a t i o n s compare with the seldom-fished wilderness marls of
Abaco, one of the last bonefish frontiers, covered with big, dumb fish.
Nettie Symonette's air-conditioned lodges offer fine meals, comfortable rooms with private baths and near exclusive access to a huge, shallow, fishery
that stretches for over 30 miles. Bahamian pine forests meet the white sand beaches of Abaco at the end of 40 miles of potholes. The track to Abaco
Bonefish Club is a cratered road to a bonefish heaven that is worth every bump. It's a trail to a paradise covered with bonefish that have seldom seen
an angler!
As if the marls were not enough, nearby Cherokee Sound offers anglers the chance to wade and sight fish to some truly large bonefish in very skinny
water...a real test of one's skills.
All meals at Great Abaco are served at the Heritage Lodge, prepared especially with the angler in mind. There is no set menu and emphasis is placed on
seafood at dinnertime, prepared in Bahamian gourmet style.
For non-fishermen, nature has provided an 8-mile stretch of beach by the new Seashell Beach Club for exploration and shell collection. The virgin reefs
offer some of the most spectacular sights for snorkeling and diving. The island has its own nature park with flamingos, wild boar, iguanas, donkeys and
numerous species of bird life. Rental cars are available as well as guided tours for those wishing to explore the island of Abaco.
A short boat ride from the lodge is the community of Cherokee Sound, the oldest continuous settlement in Abaco. It is an all-white settlement
approximately 200 years old and was settled by Irish immigrants and American Loyalists. The population is approximately 180 persons; the settlement got
electricity in 1995. All the guides live there; most have for their entire lives.
Heritage Bonefishing Club has a new recreation room with pool table, cards and games, mini-bar, satellite TV and video library, and access to the
amenities at Sea Shell. Bicycles are also available for exploring the area. The adjoining lodge contains a lounge, dining room, and porch dining area
where guest may enjoy their meals. Breakfast, lunch as well as an evening meal of fish, steak, lobster (seasonal), ribs, pork chops, chicken or wild
boar will delight.
Nature trails meander throughout the property and provide an opportunity for viewing the diverse animal population and 63 species of birds including the
endangered Abaco parrots, flamingo, egrets, ducks, osprey and heron.
